Thorlabs has developed a set of specifications for adjusters and related accessories that exceed the industry class 3 thread tolerance standard by as much as 30%. All of our fine hex adjuster screws are made to these extremely tight tolerances. Each screw is individually tested with a master gauge set that ensures the interchangeability of our adjuster screws and threaded bushings.

If you are incorporating any of these components into larger optomechanical systems, please ensure that the specifications for any mating parts you are manufacturing have the appropriate tolerances. For more details, please see the Integration tab.

Threaded Bushing Application

Integrating Fine Adjustment Screws Into Optomechanical Systems

The assembly process begins by producing the appropriately sized mating hole for the threaded bushing. The recommended bore diameters can be found with the product information for each bushing sold below. Given the close fit between the threaded bushing and the mating adjuster screw, we caution against using a press fit to assemble these products. For our own production needs, we use a permanent anaerobic adhesive that provides excellent long-term performance. Locking bushings with nuts do not require adhesive as they are held in place by the locking nut.

We recommend using Loctite Anaerobic Adhesive product number 680 or equivalent. In order to ensure maximum strength between the bonded parts, we strongly urge the user to follow carefully the instructions provided by Loctite, which specify the amount of clearance between the threaded bushing and the mounting plate. The most common source of failure is not allowing for the proper clearance between the parts being bonded since this clearance provides for the proper volume of adhesive.

When assembling, apply a small amount of the Loctite adhesive to the threaded bushing only. Rotate the bushing as it is installed to ensure a uniform distribution of the adhesive. After insertion, remove any excess adhesive from around the part.

As shown in the figure to the right, the flange on the mating bushing is designed to support the axial load of the screw and bushing assembly.

Drilling and Tapping

While we recommend using our fine adjusters with the appropriately matched threaded bushing (sold below), it is also possible to incorporate them directly into a part or material by creating a threaded hole. For the adjusters on this page, the diameter of the pilot bore should be 0.238" ± 0.002". The corresponding imperial drill bit is size B (0.2380"). The hole can then be tapped with TAP1480. For fine pitch threads, it is especially important to tightly tolerance the pilot bore because of the shallow thread depth. For more information, see our taps and drill bit kit page.

Fast Turn-Around Times
Our experienced, highly skilled machinists are running our on-site Citizen Swiss Screw Machines 24 hours a day, allowing us to produce high-volume custom and OEM orders. Each machine is capable of running unattended, producing one screw every 30 to 120 seconds. This flexibility allows us to fulfill multiple orders at once without sacrificing quality.

High Quality
Thorlabs inspects all of our fabricated precision screws and bushings after the initial fabrication process and right before packaging. All inspections adhere to the ANSI AQL1.5 acceptable quality level, which states that if a certain percentage, based upon the amount of product in a certain lot, does not meet specification, then the entire lot is not sold. This ensures that all customers receive the highest quality product every time and that all items will be of equal performance.

To Whom it concerns. I have ordered a 1/4-80 tap and need to know what drill size is recommended. I assume it would be in the ball park of a 1/4-20 tap drill size but want to get correct information. Thank You for Your help

Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. For our 1/4"-80 taps we specify a B (0.2380") imperial drill size. The specifications of our taps, including pilot bore measurements such as drill size, can be found on our "Taps and Drill Bit Kit" product family page: https://www.thorlabs.com/newgrouppage9.cfm?objectgroup_id=1189.

Hello, I can't figure out how to remove the adjustment knobs on my KS1T unit. How can I replace them ? Thanks, X
cdolbashian  (posted 2021-12-01 04:12:41.0)
Thank you for reaching out to us Xavier! In order to remove the knob from the adjustment screw, simply insert a 5/64" hex key into the center of the adjustment knob. While holding that fixed in place, turn the adjustment knob counter-clockwise. It isn't fixed with any adhesive, so it should easily be removed.

Can you recommend some alternate adhesives for bonding the F25SSN2P bushing into an aluminum housing? Would Loctite 603 be acceptable?
llamb  (posted 2021-01-09 10:48:31.0)
Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. We primarily use and recommend Loctite 680 for bonding bushings into aluminum housings/products, as 680 offers low viscosity for a smoother fitting of that bushing into the aluminum bore. Loctite 603 should be fine as well, though being a little more viscous, this may depend on the tolerance of fit between your bushing and aluminum bore.

Even though they have no inherent moving parts and don't spin on end like a top, items like FAS200 are excellent fidget object, which surprised me. I think it has a lot to do with the density of the stainless steel--it has a good weight. I've also observed that if you remove the ball bearing and stand it on end, there are many people who can't resist picking it up when visiting my desk, even people that I don't identify is fidgeters. 5 stars.

Hi, we are using the screw F25SS150 with barrel F25SS150 in a cold (-70degC) and cryogenic environment (10-5mbar). Can you share some information about the lubricant used at Thorlabs to pre-grease these components ? So we can check the compatibility, and decide if we need to clean and re-lubricate ? Thanks you very much! JB

Update from Tim at Thorlabs: We will be introducing oversized knobs for the Polaris soon and we are looking into offering color-coded Polaris knobs as well.
tcohen  (posted 2012-04-04 10:49:00.0)
Response from Tim at Thorlabs: The color-coded adjustment knobs are ¼”-80 and as you mentioned, the POLARIS-K1 knobs are ¼”-100. As a note, the KM100 is Black Anodized Aluminum and the Polaris is Stainless Steel. Color-coded adjustment knobs for identification of different POLARIS-K1 mounts in a setup would be a great addition and I am discussing your suggestion with our design team. Thank you for your feedback!
user  (posted 2012-03-31 18:29:29.0)
I don't think the new red knobs will fit on a Polaric mount? Can you make some that do? The reason they will not go on is the threading is difference. The Black mounts have 80 threads and the Metal mount has 100 threads so it will not screw on but it might go on just a little bit but then it will get stuck. If you want I will show you how to work it. It is not very to hard to do it. Also, you can make your black mount with the same nice colors, not just the knobs. But you can't do it with the metal mount that is the Polaric because it is made of metal and you can't make it colored. That is why it is silver only. I don't think you know this but I do. I can help you be smarter.

Feedback, I recently purchased the FAS100 with the F25SSN2 bushing for leveling screws. I read the Integration tab for installation and understand the assembly. The FAS100 bags have grease on the threads that I assume should be removed from the S.S. body before use. Should any lubricant be used for final assembly? Thanks. Richard

A Cross-Section of a Differential Adjuster Screw,

  • 1.02" (26.0 mm) Adjuster Length (L)
  • Coarse Thread Length: 0.76" (19.3 mm)
  • Fine Adjustment: 25 µm/rev Over ≥400 µm of Travel
  • Ø0.49" (12.4 mm), 0.15" (3.8 mm) Thick Locking Ring
  • On-Axis Load Capacity: 11.25 lbs (5.1 kg)
  • Recommended Preload: 1 to 2 lbs (0.5 to 1 kg)

Thorlabs' DAS110 Differential Adjuster Screw comes pre-greased to ensure smooth mating into compatible components. To install the adjuster, screw the threads into the bushing by hand. Ensure that cross threading does not occur in order to avoid damage to the adjuster and bushing. Additionally, the screw includes a Ø0.49" (Ø12.4 mm), 0.15" (3.8 mm) thick locking ring with a knurled surface for improved grip. Four Ø0.09" (Ø2.3 mm) blind holes in the ring allow a hex key to be inserted to assist with tightening.

When used with a compatible component, coarse adjustment is provided by the external threads on the main screw body, labeled B on the diagram to the right. The screw can be actuated using the attached knob, labeled A, or the 5/64" (2 mm) hex socket. The knob can also be removed if needed.

The fine-adjustment mechanism provides a highly de-magnified displacement of 25 µm per revolution and can be actuated using a 1/16" hex accessible through the center of the 5/64" (2 mm) hex for coarse adjustment.

As illustrated in the diagram to the right, an intermediate actuator, labeled C, is threaded into the main body screw (B) and onto a push rod (D) that terminates with a ball tip. A pin on the push rod fits into a slot on the main body screw and prevents these two components from rotating relative to each other. As a result, when the intermediate actuator is rotated, it will be translated along the main body screw at a rate determined by the intermediate actuator's external thread pitch while the push rod is translated in the opposite direction at a rate determined by the intermediate actuator's internal thread pitch. Thus, differential movement is achieved between the intermediate actuator and the push rod.

The DAS110 differential adjuster screw has an intermediate actuator with an external thread pitch of 400 µm and an internal thread pitch of 375 µm. When the intermediate actuator is rotated clockwise, it advances in the main body by 400 µm per revolution. At the same time, the push rod, which is restricted from rotating by the main body, retreats by 375 µm per revolution, providing a total displacement of 25 µm per revolution.

The DAS110 adjuster can replace the standard 1/4"-80 adjusters used on most Thorlabs Kinematic Mirror Mounts.

While we recommend using our fine adjusters with the appropriately matched threaded bushing (sold below), it is also possible to incorporate them directly into a part or material by creating a threaded hole. • Recommended Bore Diameter: 0.3395" +0.0005"/-0.0000"

Our 1/4"-80 threaded phosphor bronze bushings are commonly used in slip fit applications where fine adjusters are needed. The recommended bore diameter for our 1/4"-80 bushings is 0.3395" +0.0005"/-0.0000". The longer bushing (F25SSN1P) allows for increased stability, while the shorter bushing (F25SSN2P) can be used when space is a constraint. The 510 Phosphor Bronze material is also vacuum compatible for 10-6 Torr; prior to use in vacuum applications, we recommend a thorough ultrasonic cleaning to remove any grease or particulates. Due to the tolerances of our fine adjusters, we discourage press fitting these bushings. Please see the Integration tab for more information.

A Single Locking Collar Can Lock an Adjuster in Position
  • Extremely Compact Lock Nut: 0.05" (1.1 mm) Thick
  • Use One Collar To Lock an Adjuster to a Bushing
  • Use Two Collars to Create a Hard Stop on an Adjuster
  • Sold in Packages of Five
  • Install and Remove with the SPW402 Spanner Wrench (Sold Below)

These locking collars are compact alternatives to the lock nuts sold above. They are only 0.05" (1.1 mm) thick and are constructed of 303 stainless steel. They are compatible with all of the 1/4"-80 adjusters sold on this page, as well as those used in many of our mirror mounts and stages.

As shown in the photos to the right, they can be used to lock an adjuster in a desired position or to create a hard stop at any position to prevent overdriving an adjuster. In addition to using two collars to create a hard stop, as shown in the photo to the far right, a single collar can be epoxied to an adjuster using our G14250 epoxy to create a permanent hard stop. We recommend the SPW402 Spanner Wrench to install or remove these locking collars.

1/4"-80 Low-Profile, Removable Adjustment Knob

F25SSK1S has a small diameter and includes side holes for adjustment with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) hex key.
  • Use with 1/4"-80 Adjusters
  • Ø0.15" (Ø3.8 mm) Clearance Hole for Accessing the Adjuster with a Balldriver
  • Six Ø0.09" (2.4 mm) Holes on the Sides of the Knob Compatible with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) Balldriver
  • Ø0.35" (8.9 mm) Diameter Knob

Our F25SSK1S Low-Profile, Removable Adjustment Knobs thread onto our 1/4"-80 F25SS series hex adjusters, which can be found on many of our kinematic mounts, and allow for the use of an adjuster without a hex key. This provides quick and easy adjustments for a broad range of applications.  In addition, these knobs feature six equally spaced actuation holes along the outer diameter of the knob that can be engaged with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver or hex key, as shown in the image to the right. The side holes provide the user with a method for more precise adjustments and allow the user an easier method of turning the knob when access to the knob is limited in an experimental setup. The small diameter (Ø0.35") of this knob also allows kinematic mounts, such as the KS1, to be attached directly to an optical table or breadboard, as shown in the image to the right.
