Project Considerations

To successfully integrate advanced imaging technology into a complex host system, there are many factors to consider beyond component development:

  • Selection of the best-suited parameters for the imaging technology within the context of the host system and its application
  • A dedicated engineering team that is in close contact with the host system development team
  • Customization of certain components for seamless host system integration
  • A reliable manufacturing process that provides timely delivery of high-quality components

Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging technology that analyzes echoes of backscattered light from layers of microstructures close to the surface of the sample (i.e., up to several millimeters deep). This low coherence, interferometric technology generally employs near infrared light and offers a spatial resolution of 1 - 15 µm, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than conventional ultrasound. It can generate real-time, volumetric data at video frame rates.

OCT is commonly used for in vivo analysis of biological tissues but is expanding into other domains such as non-destructive material inspection. Currently, OCT is an established technique often used in medical imaging systems, offering a level of precision and reliability that was not possible before.

Thorlabs' OCT group in Lübeck, Germany specializes in the development of Spectral Domain OCT engines, while our group in Newton, NJ has expertise in the development of Swept Source OCT components and systems, including a new MEMS-Tunable VCSEL Swept Source Laser Source offering single mode, mode-hop-free operation over a tuning range in excess of 100 nm.

I would like to inquire about your OCT system. As a non-clinical research institute in Korea, we are conducting testing for the development of medical devices and drugs. We would like to set up a test using your OCT system. We would like to perform 3D image test analysis for mouse and rat ophthalmology, brain activation, tissue characterization, live blood flow imaging, and biodegradable drugs on the skin and subcutaneously. We would like to find the optimal conditions for testing using your OCT equipment. I would appreciate it if you could suggest the specifications and options of the OCT equipment to me.

Hi, We are developing an OCT system for laser welding monitoring. What we are proposed to do is integrate OCT beam into a current laser welding system and a 3d-galvanometer system. If possible, can I know the approximate price to customize an OCT system?

Hello! I am writing to you from Russia from Krasnogorsk. Our company “Krasnogorsk factory” makes optical systems for various applications including for medicine. At present we have started the development of an optical tomograph for scanning the retina of the eye. For this work, we need the OKT block with the following characteristics: - The central wavelength is 1 μm; - the width of the spectrum at half the maximum (FWHM) - not less than 50 nm; - speed of image acquisition - not less than 50 000 A-scans / sec; - The time of 3D scanning with the size of the scan zone 6x6 mm - no more than 0.75 seconds; - depth of scanning - not less than 3 mm. Please tell me if you could develop such a system for us. In the case of a positive answer, tell me how much it will cost and what term of production. We plan to sell the product to 100 pieces per year. Ready to cooperate. Looking forward to your answer. Best regards, Project Manager Elena Sharko

I am working on a proposal where I want to integrate an OCT into an off the shelf 3D scanner system. The system consist of a Galilean telescope (2.8x Mag 7.15mm input aperture), a scanner head (20mm input aperture) and a f-theta lens with a focal length of 80mm. Ball park, I want to know how much money to set aside in the proposal for an OCT development to support this type of system. Regards, Ty Olmstead (321) 277-7725
