Thorlabs offers an array of multimode 1x2 fiber couplers with Ø50 µm or Ø62.5 µm graded-index fibers operating at 850 ± 40 nm. These couplers are available with 50:50, 90:10, or 99:1 split ratios, either unterminated or terminated with FC/PC connectors. All splitters include Ø900 µm protective jacketing. Our multimode 1x2 couplers are fully bidirectional, allowing them to be used as couplers (combiners) or splitters. These multimode couplers offer low insertion loss and excellent environmental and mechanical stability, making them ideal solutions for combining and splitting signals in multimode fiber systems, such as monitoring optical signals with minimum loss. See the Chromatic Operation tab for information about using these couplers at other wavelengths.

Thorlabs' multimode 1x2 couplers have a specified operating wavelength range of 850 ± 40 nm. However, the splitting ratio remains nearly constant over a much greater wavelength range, as shown in the plots below. Click here to download the coupling data shown below.

Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: We can make the couplers on this page with FC/APC connectors as a custom. We will get in contact with you regarding a quote for this.

Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: The fiber used in the FCMM625-50A is the GIF625 (specs can be found at http://www.thorlabs.com/NewGroupPage9.cfm?ObjectGroup_ID=358&pn=GIF625). The Ge-doped core has a graded index profile and is Ø62.5µm. The cladding made from acrylate and is Ø125µm.

Hi. The catalog mentions very good mechanical and environmental stability. What is the variation over the temperature range? Thanks.

Response from Buki: Thank you for your feedback regarding our multimode fiber coupler. Unfortunately we do not have any data on the performance outside the operating wavelength range. In general, I would expect the coupling ratio to change and the insertion loss to increase at 488nm. Please contact us at TechSupport@thorlabs.com if you have further questions.

Has there been any report on using this for 488nm? How is the splitting ratio? Any products being made with 50/50 split for 488nm?

Response from Javier at Thorlabs to jukka.viheriala: we have not characterized the performance of our MM couplers at the 980 nm wavelength. However, the splitting ratio will most likely deviate significantly from its value at the center wavelength.

Have you characterized splitting ratio and losses at 980 nm. I would need a coupler that makes roughly 50/50 to 10/90 splitting at 980 nm.

A response from Adam at Thorlabs: At this time we do not have an exact damage threshold specification for 3ns pulses. If we had more specifications about your laser, we may be able to determine how well the couplers will hold up. These couplers can withstand an average power of 300mW. I will email you directly to get extra information about your power specifications.

Do you have any information about the intensity threshold for a 3ns pulse at 800nm? Thank you.

A response from Ken at Thorlabs to jennifer.reiberkyle: It will transmit but we do not know what the split ratio will be. We can offer you a loan unit to test if you are interested. Please send your detail contact information to techsupport@thorlabs.com so that we can set up the loan for you.

Can this product be used with a 488nm-wavelength signal? If so, how would this affect the split ratio? If not, do you have any products that will work at 488nm? Thanks!

A response from Tyler at Thorlabs to algomez: We don’t have a measurement of the insertion loss for the FCMM625-99A-FC, however, the insertion loss for the FCMM625-50A-FC is 4 dB when used with 850 nm light. The FCMM625-99A-FC should have nearly the same specification. It is possible to custom order a 2x2 MM fiber coupler but this requires the generation of a custom quote, which can be generated by supplying a member of our technical support team with the specifications of the desired component. Thank you for using our feedback forum.

Can you please tell me what the insertion/excess loss is on this graded index fiber 99:1 coupler? FCMM625-99A-FC Also, if you make these in house, is it possible to make the coupler a 2x2 instead of a 2x1? We would like to send 2 signals in, and 2 outputs. Thanks -Tony
